Caleb: A Profile in Boldness
When ten Hebrew spies warned their countrymen to steer clear of Canaan, only two others, Joshua and Caleb, urged them to advance with God.
The name Caleb can mean, “bold, impetuous,” and Joshua’s friend certainly had boldness. Caleb had a faith so full that even the fearsome giants living on Hebron did not deter him (Josh. 14:6–12). He believed the Lord when few others did. He claimed the promises of God and did not allow four harsh decades in the wilderness to erode his belief. He had wanted to take possession of Canaan forty-five years earlier, and he hadn’t changed his mind. Truly, Caleb was all heart—for he obeyed the Spirit of God.
All of us would do well to follow suit. First let’s make sure we have a full faith, and then a surrendered heart. Only then can we face the foreboding giants before us.
