Cyrus: An Instrument of God
Mighty men and ruthless conquerors may come and go, imposing their will on those in their path—but the Bible reminds us that the will of only one Ruler ultimately matters.
While the decree of the Persian king Cyrus sent Ezra back to Jerusalem, Scripture makes it clear that he did only what God prompted him to do. The Bible says, “the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia Cyrus” to issue his proclamation, “that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled” (2 Chr. 36:22; Ezra 1:1).
Exactly this had been prophesied more than a century before by the prophet Isaiah, who called Cyrus God’s “anointed” and “shepherd” and said the king would do everything the Lord had called him to do—even though God had said of Cyrus, “you have not known Me” (Is. 44:24–28; 45:1–5). God rules! And He uses whomever He chooses.
