15 Minute Bible Study
Sharing Your Faith
Memory Verse:
1 Corinthians 2:1-5

One risk in attending church regularly or hearing frequent Christian broadcasts is that we can actually become so accustomed to the message that truth has diminishing impact upon our lives. One area that often becomes downplayed in this way is the Bible's call to evangelism. We all agree it's important, but many believers act as if it doesn't apply to them personally.

The fact is, a Christian cannot be an obedient servant of Jesus Christ while refusing to tell others about Him. Yet, many believers fall into this trap—some because they fear rejection, others because they think their testimony lacks power, and still others because they're unsure how best to discuss salvation.

 Humility is Essential

To effectively communicate the saving message of Christ, we need the right spirit. Paul approached the Corinthians, not "with superiority of speech or of wisdom," but in "weakness and . . . much trembling" (1 Corinthians 2:1, 3). He knew they would not be won over by his own convincing language or clever arguments. Instead, he addressed them humbly. Scripture repeatedly shows that a spirit of true humility is essential for faithful service to God. (Isaiah 66:2; Micah 6:8; Philippians 2:1–8)

The Danger of Pride

One of the major hindrances to effective witnessing is pride. Whenever we emphasize our intelligence, our charm, or our personality, we make ourselves the focus of the message, and that is idolatry. Pride puffs up our egos so that we think we can win people to the Lord in our own strength. Mindful of this danger, Paul constantly directed attention away from himself and toward the work of Christ. (1 Corinthians 1:17)

Since pride can also cause fear of rejection, we often remain silent when we inwardly know we should speak out for Christ. Remember that our acceptance isn't found in men, but in God. What may feel like rejection to our prideful egos is actually a rejection of the Gospel of Christ, not of us, its messengers.

  QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION

1. The last time you missed an opportunity to witness, what prevented your sharing about Christ?

2. How much of your testimony centers around you, and how much is about the Lord?
